about

I wrote this one weekend in 2018 after my brother set up a "summer song challenge" that he and I and some friends participated in.

It's a summer song. About summer. Freedom, at one point, anyway, from any and all responsibility, freedom to sit nervously with your crush out on the diving board, then shelter together from a surprise storm.

To me it's also about leaving. About moving away and seeing that rush of young love already so distant, knowing that nothing will ever compete. Or, who knows, maybe some other summer ...

lyrics

The sand between your toes, sitting close
The moment rushes in, and it shows
Out on the diving board
Till the clouds threatened rain
And we ran

In summer '84, when the waves
Would send us overboard
That's before we moved away
Now the waves don't feel the same
(Let it go.)
